Max’s Sunset Boulevard – Brighton’s Original Skate Haven
In the late 1970s, Max’s Sunset Boulevard stood at the heart of the UK skate scene. Founded by Phil Lobatto and named after his son, Max’s wasn’t just a skate shop—it was a cultural hub. With locations inside The Cage Skatepark under the arches on Brighton seafront, and tucked behind Jean Junction on Western Road, Max’s became legendary.
More than just a retailer, Max’s fostered a tight-knit skate community and sponsored a powerhouse team that included Jock Patterson, Mark Baker, and Tim Dunkley, among others. These were the riders who helped shape British skateboarding, and Max’s was the launchpad.
Today, the Max’s name still stands for raw, roots-driven skate culture—Brighton born and bred
